1992 150 horse alarm, low power, no start

Asking to see if I'm headed in the right direction. sometimes when running across the lake it will set an alarm, then it acts like it is missing and has low power. we will let it sit for awhile and then go back out and it acts fine for awhile. so I was going to replace the fuel pump and impeller, also might start premixing fuel and oil. Is there stuff I need to disconnect to keep it from setting alarms

It is probably an overheat alarm. Replace complete water pump and check thermostats, should solve problem.
