I have a 1996 50 HP that will run great for a short period of time, then falls on its face. Loses power, drops from around 5100 rpm to about 3800 rpm max., slight miss at idle. Had carbs cleaned, replaced CDI box, timer base, coils all have spark. Seems to perk back up after cooling down generally but not always. Taken to shop several times but no luck, intermittent, seems to only happen on lake under load. Any ideas, can a bad stator cause this???? Getting very frustrated.

Try pumping fuel primer bulb to see if rpm's pick back up, try bumping choke to see if rpm's pick up. Is the fuel tank venting? remove fuel cap to see if changes. You can check spark on each cylinder with a timing light on each spark plug wire when it boggs down.

Sounds like its dropping a cylinder. If you know it is firing on all cylinders then it's either carbs or reed valves.
