I have a 1996 Evinrude 150hp Intruder. It is a 60* with the OIS. I have done quite a bit to this engine since getting it. Here is a list of what I have done so far.
Replaced the power pack (blue with red sleeve)
Replaced the spark plugs (factory # Champions)
Replaced the plug wires (grey as recommended)
Replaced the primer ball & hose (not from walmart)
Drained the fuel tank & put in fresh fuel
Disconnected the shift interrupter switch (faulty & pointless)
Replaced water pump (OEM kit)
Changed lower unit gear oil
Replaced stator
Cleaned carbs (kits were recently installed prior to me owning it)
Cleaned fuel pump (rebuilt prior to me owning it)
Installed new water separator filter
I may be missing a few things, but basically I have done almost everything. The oil injection system has been removed (VRO) prior to me owning it, but it was done right. No issues with that, I mix my fuel 50:1 & only use Johnson / Evinrude outboard oil. I had a lot of issues with water in the gas for a while, but I believe I have that situation under control now. My problem is this, I took it out & it ran great at the dock & while idling out to the channel. I hit the throttle to get it on plane & it jumped out of the water with no trouble at all. However, after about 45 - 60 seconds on plane, it began to die out. I brought it back to idle & it seemed to work itself out so I hit it again & away we went. Then again it did it, the same thing, only this time she died. So I checked the primer ball & it looked normal (no flattening or anything) so I primed it up again & seemed to do the trick. Tried one more time & still same issue. Primed the ball & worked fine. At this point I idled it back to the dock, put it on my trailer & took it home. I checked the connections & all seems good, filters are clear & nothing leaking. I also took the fuel pump apart to check it out & that's how I know it was rebuilt, has new diaphragms in it & all. No rips, holes or tears. Any ideas would be appreciated????
