Warning sound

my Johnson 150 gave a warning signal and a warning light on the dash gauge when we went to 4000 rpm We did notice a kink in the fuel line by the ball. We straightened it out and it seemed to stop the problem [ we hope for good once we fix the line ] My question is - would a lack of fuel cause the warnings? Every thing else seemed fine, temp ect.
