I've got a 1996 Johnson fast strike with no fire to the plugs. I've disconnected the kill switch wire on the motor, but still no fire.

I assume you're speaking of the Black/Yellow wire that leads to the powerpack kill circuit? If so, besides disconnecting it from the kill switch, it mainly needs to be disconnected from the ignition switch "M" terminal.
You do not want that Black/Yellow wire connected to anything.... Now, with it disconnected from the ignition switch, do you have spark?... If you have spark with that wire disconnected from the ignition switch... BUT... No Spark with it connected to the ignition switch, replace the ignition switch.
