1990s Johnson 35hp: how to disconnect shift rod from lower unit.

I have a 1990ish 35hp long shaft Johnson motor in need of a water pump repair. I unbolted the lower unit. The lower unit separated about an inch, but I could not figure out how to disconnect the shift rod. I expected to see a connector with 2 bolts like my 15hp Johnson but no luck. I can't figure out how to disconnect the shifting shaft to remove the lower unit to get at the water pump. Any help?
