  • 1985 Johnson 20 Hp (J20CRC0S) Holes in forward end of Mid-Section

Hi All. I am currently rebuilding this motor and was wondering what the two holes were for in the front of the Mid-Section just above where the lower front rubber mount is attached. They are directly connected to the vertical drive shaft tube so water will freely enter this area. Is my engine missing something that would keep the water out? Or is this a normal setup?

I have a nice picture of what I am talking about but I am not able to "create or remove attachments" at this time.

    Thanks

    Steve

I see it on parts diagram but I don't remember seeing anything in those holes, https://www.boats.net/catalog/johnso...ric-start-only
Water getting in is not a problem there is just exhaust and water exiting engine inside that housing.

Thanks. Just seemed odd to me because you have the Impeller housing spacer that goes from the top of the water pump to the bottom of the vertical drive shaft tube with O-rings and then you have those two open holes into that area. Seems like they wanted to keep it isolated but then also have it open.

Those holes are water relief outlets to keep the water from shooting up the driveshaft tube... keeps the water away from the bottom main bearing & seal area.
