1990's 35hp: how is the shifting lever disconnected from lower unit?

I have a 1990ish 35hp Johnson long shaft needing a water pump repair. I unbolted the lower unit, but I cannot uncouple the shifting rod. I expected to find a coupler with 2 small bolts. When the lower unit was separated from the upper housing I could see the water pump and the shifting rod, but no coupler. I have repaired some older 20hp Johnson motors that have an access cover on the side. I don't see a cover on this model. I have repaired Mariner motors that disconnect the shifter at the shifting lever. I am lost. any help?

Remove water pump inlet screen from lower unit, the connector is there.
