  • 1989 60hp VRO Johnson (J60TLCEA) please help!!

I will try to be as detailed as possible...

I have a 1989 60hp VRO Johnson (J60TLCEA) it has be running very well for about the entire 5 years I have owned it. It does not run on the VRO it has been premixed since I have had it and before.

Over the last month this engine has not run correctly....

    Symptoms....
    1. Motor will run great for 5-60 mins no problem then it loses power almost sounds like it loses some kind of power and won't run at WOT.

I have tested all chambers and compression is great, it has spark. New plugs, new separator, new fuel lines, cleaned and rebuilt carbs, new fuel filter, new primer ball, new fuel vent, drained fuel, and replaced solenoid switch. And still bogs down and won't run at full wot. It sounds muffled when this happens almost sounds like something shuts down.

Once the engine goes into this bogging like scenario if it shuts off it takes a Herculean effort to start it back up.

Though I got a break yesterday when I noticed the battery cable was fastened loose to the positive terminal. And when I tightened it down started up and ran fine. Ran it this morning all was fine for about 2 hours and them idled down for 2 mins and it started bogging and the charging was not as strong or working at all. I went to the cable and all seemed fine there
    and tight there.

I am lost and cannot seem to figure this out.

Looking for some help feeling it may be electrical just not sure. I'd the vro oil:fuel pump run on vacuum or is it electrical? Just out of ideas and any help would be great.

    Thanks!!

    Mike

Try pumping primer bulb or bumping choke to see if can keep it running, if so have a fuel problem. Can use a timing light to see if loosing fire to a cylinder when motor is acting up.

      Hi Mike,

I`ve had the same problem with my Johnson 50 VRO 1989. Although both of ignition cabels seemed to be OK, one of them worked discontinually. I replaced it, the Motor runs smoothly again. I couldn´t imagine that kind of failiure is possible, still, these ignition cables are at least 24 years old - the optical condition doesn´t say much. Greetings from Germany, Stefan
