  • 1981 Johnson 35 TOP Crank Bearing

    Hello,

    New to this forum. I have a 1981 Johnson 35 Model J35ECIG, S/N C8118578.

Helping a friend replace the top needle bearing on the crankshaft. This bearing has a hole punched outward in the outer housing to form a pin of sorts.

I was not there when he removed the crank, from the case, and did not see where this pin on the bearing should be located into the case when the crank is reinstalled.

There appears to be two be two locations where this could be:

-There is a small half moon shape recess where the two cases join together that the bearing pin will align with.

    - Also there is a hole at the bottom of one of the case half's bearing recess into which the bearing pin will align. This hole appears to be ported to the crank case.

Using SELOC manual of course and it does not show how this should go together....

Anybody have a proper OEM manual they could refer to and tell me the correct installation?

I can post some pictures if required to explain this better.

    Thanks

The pin fits into the recess in crankcase halves to lock bearing in place when crankcase is bolted back together.

Thanks for the quick reply Boat.net.

To be sure we understand each other I have attached a couple of pics for your review .

The first one is of the notch where the two half's of the crank case meet. Is this the correct spot?

The second picture is of the hole in the bottom of one of the crank case journals where the bearing sits. This is NOT the correct spot for the pin...Is that what you are saying?

Please specify which picture is the right one.

      Thanks

Unable to upload pictures....don't know why. I am on Yamaha Forum all the time and don't have a problem. It says I am not authorized to upload attachment???

        Please help.

When you rest crankshaft in crankcase you can rotate top main brg until locator pin on bearing fits into notch in crankcase half. I wish the manual had a clear picture of it for us to post but I can't find one.

Thanks for your help. I checked the engine today and figured out that the bearing will only fit one way.

                Really appreciate your interest.
