  • 1999 Johnson 225

I just purchased a 1999 Triton SF with a 1999 225 Johnson. It does take a bit to get it started. I squeeze the bulb until firm which it starts but dies. I usually have to do this 3 times and then it starts. Once it starts it smokes like crazy, blue smoke. It seems to smoke a lot at first start and while idling. It starts right up anytime during the day without pushing the key in. I started running synthetic in hopes of less smoke which didn't do much. I did change the plugs and gapped them at .030. The motor runs great, pees water good and doesn't get hot. I probably average around 45-50 while out running around.

    Thank you

Give it about 1/3 throttle when starting it up cold. Does it still have VRO pump on it or do you mix oil in gas? Using good oil makes a big difference in how much it smokes.

Yes, vro pump is still on it. I purchased Mercury Quick Silver Synthetic oil. Suggestions on oil? I read another post and a person suggested using Amsoil. It runs really good except for the smoking

Did previous owner put oil in gas? The Mercury oil is good oil, maybe will notice a difference after running Mercury oil through it.

No, it has oil injection. He use reg 2 stroke oil purchased at Walmart. I thought about changing out the fuel line along with a new bulb to see if that works. I'm kind of stumped as to lessening the smoke.
My previous boat, 1992 ProCraft had a Merc 150 which didn't smoke bad at all.

Once you get that cheap oil out of it you should notice a difference, if not then may need to replace VRO pump, I haven't seen any pump too much oil but may be possible.

I replaced all fuel lines, removed and refastened oil lines and installed new clamps on everything. Pumped the bulb until firm and the motor fired right up. I would have to pump the bulb 3-4 separate times prior before it would start. It did seem like the smoke was a little lighter too!

Update on my progress with my 225. Starts right up with a lot less smoke than before and idle is better with light smoke too!
