  • Manual Tilt to Power Tile & Trim Conversion

I have recently purchased a boat with a 1999 35Hp Johnson 3-cylinder 2-stroke outboard. The model number is J35TEL3EEM. It is a manual tilt model and I would like to convert it to a power tilt and trim version.

Has anyone done this conversion before using genuine Johnson parts?

I have started looking at the differences between the manual and PT&T versions. The new part prices certainly add up quickly to the point where it is not really viable.

It may not have been a very popular model here in Australia, because the outboard wreckers within 3 hours drive of home don't have any.

The after-market PT&T units may be an option, but they set the outboard back 6" or so and don't have a very appealing look.

Are there other Johnson or Evinrude models that use the same PT&T hardware as my engine?

    Good advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

Same power tilt unit was used on 1996-2002 25,35,40 and 50 hp models. The original power tilt unit is tilt only not trim and I believe the aftermarket ones are power tilt only as well. If you find a used power tilt and trim unit you will probably need to get the whole motor bracket, the PT&T unit probably won't fit in your bracket.

      Thank you.

That might be very handy information!

I managed to track down a mid-section that included the trim unit and the wiring harness. It cost me plenty

But it didn't come with the trim sender unit. Of course the genuine part no. 0586083 is obsolete and not in stock anywhere I have looked.

        Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

        Thanks.

I searched for that number and didn't find any, I doubt you can find a used one that is still good. May have to go without a trim gauge.

Ok thanks. Do you know if there is a close alternative that can be modified?

I managed to find a used example. Cost me plenty again

The tilt and reverse lock knob on my outboard is broken. It looks like it got seriously tortured by a previous owner - one end is snapped off. I can't attach a photo unfortunately - I get a "You are not authorized to create or remove attachments" error here.

Do I really need this part anyway? It looks like it is supposed to be used as a stop for the outboard leg while the boat is on the trailer. And it must a function with the boat in reverse too. But if it requires manual rotation to avoid breaking, then I'm likely to forget one day too.

                Thanks.

With power tilt and trim you do not need it or want the reverse lock on it.
