I recently purchased older boat to restore. It has a 1977 140hp Johnson outboard, model 140ML77S, serial no: j4779547. The juice goes through four "coil and yoke assemblies", from which a spark plug cable goes to their respective plugs. The plug end terminates in a typical 90 degree boot with a coiled spring in the boot. The other end goes directly into the coil/yoke assy. Upon finding extensive corrosion on the plug end, and having one of the boot springs come out of the boot due to being corroded to the plug end, I started thinking about replacing the cables as well as the plugs. Thinking the other end was a screw-in type connector, I "unscrewed" one. The cable came out as a plain cut-off cable, no terminal at all. Looking into the receptacle for the cable on the coil/yoke assy, I see a metal "nipple" that the cable obviously goes over. My question is this: are the cables replaceable, or is this one assembly (coil/yoke and cable) that needs to be replaced as a unit?
