My 40 hp 93 Johnson outboard would only run at about 1/4 max speed.
While testing with a water hose feed, it ran for about 5 minutes, with intermittent manual choking, then it stopped and would not run again and was no longer pumping water when trying to start. Some smoke was coming from the prop near the cotter pin and 2-3 table spoons of water/oil leaked out from the prop also near the cotter pin.
Is this typical of a failed water pump or worse?
