1997 150 lower unit swap

Replaced the lower unit, set the shifting linkage back to where it was and now the shifter is way out of whack. Does the linkage need to be re-adjusted or can this be adjusted out with the cable?

Just for the record, neutral is now about half way between the regular neutral position and reverse on the shifter. Any help is appreciated....
