  • 1999 Johnson 175 Bogging Issue

    Motor is a 1999 Johnson 175

    What's going on:

    1. My motor losses of power after the engine warms up. I can run across the lake to my first fishing hole. Turn the motor off and fish for a while. Then I fire the motor up w/o problems. Then, when I engage the throttle to take off, and it sounds like it is trying to bog down and can never get off to plain out. It may stall once or twice, but not much. It idles fine in neutral.

    What I have done:
    1. New plugs
    2. New Fuel line, bulb and fuel Filter
    3. Replaced the Ignition coils. I didnt replace the spak plug cables yet, but will try it next.
    4. Check the gas cap vents and even pulled off the cap to see if that would help.

I have tried it out on the water after every adjustment.
Runs fine in Idle and at home with the water ears on it, but it seems like it has the issue when placed under a load.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    trying to fix the issue

My buddy found online in a different forum - It may be the choke sticking...and the fix is...when the problem occurs...pump the choke on the boat and everything will start working...I am going to try this on Friday when I go out.

that didnt work...so, I have noticed that my Primer Fuel bulb was not hardening, so I changed it out...then it never would harden. I found on here that it will harden if you point the arrow upward and then pump the bulb...It worked...taking my boat out this weekend to see if that fixes my problem.

ok...I am at my wits end...I have talked with a mechanic on the phone that is completely swamped with work and would be 2 months out on working on my boat...so he had me try this. have a buddy with me...take off the motor hood and air intake...have my buddy give it gas while I take a rag and cover up each carb intake individually...I found that on 5 of the intakes...them motor bogged down and the 6th one...nothing changed.
This let me to believe that I needed to do a carb rebuild kit...so, I didnt on 2 of them...that didnt work!!!!!!!!!! So, I am back to sqaure 1.

Here is what I have done so far:
1.changed spark plugs (2 were fowled)
2.changed all 3 dual ignition modules
3.eliminated the gas tank by moving the fuel line to a 5 gallon can.
4.replaced the fuel line and filter
5.did a carb rebuild on 2 of the carbs and cleaned everything with carb cleaner.
6.tried pushing the key clutch in while running (maybe the clutch was stuck)
        7. tried Seafoam/Carb cleaner in the fuel and ran 5 gallons thru in idle in the driveway.

I have the same problem as you describe. My motor seems to be sluggish in neutral but when i increase the speed, the RPM starts at about 2000 and then will climb ot well over 6000, but gradually. Can't figure that out.l

              Fixed

They fixed it. It was my Stator and the power pack. I also changed the little switch that connects to the power pack....so...this fix cost me about $1100 in parts and labor...the labor was the killer..$75/hr...the parts were - Stator ($389) - which I should have bought on ebay for $200 new, but they convinced me to buy thiers for the warranty. Power Pack & switch combo ($255) - I bought this on Ebay new with a 2 year warranty. so...$600 in parts and $500 in labor. I got my boat back last night and it ran like a CHAMP!!! I hope this helps out some ppl....I know it can get expensive doin the trial and error. If you can install it yourself, it will cost you about $450...Good Luck
