My buddy and I just came into two Johnson outboard motors; one a 8 horsepower and the other a 15. They had been sitting in a friend's garage for over 10 years. After some wrestling and getting new gas, we can get both of them start but neither runs for more than a few seconds.
The 8 hp engine runs rich; we can only get it started when the choke is all the way in and even then, it runs really rich (thick smoke) before dying. The 15 hp engine only starts with the choke all the way out, then dies shortly after (we close the choke immediately). Any suggestions?
