  • Can disconnecting VRO pump damage the internal fuel pump?

I had my VRO pump disconnected when I had my Johnson 225 (1988) rebuilt last year. Now my fuel pump, ie, the VRO died. The guys that did the rebuild are highly reputable so I don't know why they would recommend something that would damage something. Now another mechanic says that by disconnecting it, on one side of the diaphragm there is no lubricant so it damages the fuel pump. His logic makes sense - but I'm confused and now face a $500 bill. Anyone know something about this? A lot of mechanics seem to recommend disconnecting it.
