  • starter motor squealing

I have a 2004 2-stroke johnson that when the starter is engaged, it makes an awful squealing noise. it starts the motor just fine and quits when the starter disengages. it didn't do it when I first installed it (it's a replacement). Any ideas/suggestions?

If it was recent then I would take it back. There's nothing wrong with the squealing noise. Mine does the same thing and starts the motor just fine. If its a rebuilt starter you picked up, they likely missed something in the rebuild. I still have the original starter on my 84 140. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to not do anything about it. I keep my new starter, plugs, batteries etc. with me for WHEN I have to change them. It's just a sign that it needs some lovin!

What kind of lovin would you suggest? Clean and lube? If so, what should I clean it with? I don't think it needs shimmed, as there were no shims on the original one. Also, this is a replacement, but a new one, not remanufactured.
      Thanks

Honestly, if you're up for it, I use a non corrosive electronic parts cleaner and it's your choice on lubricant. What I use is my own opinion based on personal experience. BUT with it being new, I would recommend taking it back. All starters make noise, but if it the lower pitched loud squeal, request a replacement.
