Charging system

I have an '88 johnson 48hp outboard. Model number j48eslccc. My question is whether or not the engine has a charging system? I tried valiantly, but could not find any info. Andd if it doesnt, can i install an alternator?

I was wondering the same about mine. There should be a black box under the cowl if I'm not mistaken. I just stopped by my local boat shop on the way to the lake. They won't charge you to pop the cowl off for a quick look.
