Johnson 48spl shift rod installation
I have a Johnson 48spl and am installing a new seal kit in the lower unit.
I removed the bearing carrier assembly and inspected the gears and pinion.
I did not remove the forward gear or pinion gear,so I removed the gear shift lever bolt and pulled out the entire shift rod assembly including the shift lever, so I could pull out the propeller shaft. The shift cradle remained on the shift dog shaft at that point and came out with the propeller shaft.
Now I am re-assembling, how do I re-install the shift lever with the linkage and the shifter cradle onto the shift dog shaft?
I am trying to insert the entire assembly from the top side, including the shifter cradle. It does not seem to want to go in far enough? What am I doing wrong?
