remove foot 196? 40hp Johnson electromatic

My nephew bought 196? 40hp Johnson RKL-29E electromatic outboard motor. It will run so we were going to replace impeller and can not get foot off because there are 2 wires coming from motor going down into foot & we can't find how to disconect them to drop the foot to change impeller. how do we disconnect these 2 wires to drop foot and is there any other surprises we are going to run into because this is the first time we have messed with old electrmatic eng? Please help.

They disconnect at engine and tie a piece of string to wires so can pull wires back up when putting lower unit back on.
