  • 1990 25 hp johnson starter wont engage

Never have had the slightest problem with my motor starting, but yesterday I went fishing and it started fine all day,but when i went to the boat ramp to load the boat the motor wouldnt start. The stater would make like a spinning noise but it wouldnt engage to the flywheel. Any ideas??

Im having a similar problem with my 25HP

      tsparro,

Odd, I just bought a 1990 Johnson 25HP VJ25ELESE which is on a small fishing boat with controls. When I bought it 3 weeks ago it started and ran. Since then I've done nothing to it but today was going to do a test run on the river and cant get it to start. When I turn the key it engages the starter but it only clicks or engages the starter slightly. It never engages enough to have the motor turn over. I replaced the battery thinking that was the problem but it made no difference. Im not a mechanic but I have manual and am trying to see what it may be. Can anyone help? I;m thinkin maybe solenoid but not sure.

      Thanks
      Frank

Fixed the Problem with starter not engaging

Ok, I know this sounds crazy but I saw elsewhere on line that someone said to spray a bit of WD40 into the starter wheel to see if its frozen up. I did that and now its working fine. Odd but I'll take it since now we're out on the water.

I had the same problem with my starter.
Took the starter to my local :auto electric shop: & they rebuilt the starter.
My starter is 30yrs. old & now it works like new.

Starter motor brushes are worn out, probably only one, as this is common for low torque wont engage problem.

Replacing to brushes easy job an not very expensive to do yourself
