40 hp Johnson Tilt assist not working

I have a 1993 40hp Johnson model TJ40ELETB that the tilt assist is not working. I can raise and lower the unit but no way to keep it up. Is there any way to keep it up once raised from inside the boat. Also can you use an assist handle to help raise the motor from inside the boat, this thing is heavy but I wouldn't want to damage the engine cover.

Yes can use a tilt assit handle.

Thanks for the great info. I thought those were for use if the motor had power tilt. I didn't realize that if you raise the motor high enough they would turn all the way around and support the motor in the up position.
