72 johnson 20 hp lower unit what to use for seal?

72 johnson 20 hp. i am about to reseal the lower unit, the manual mentions to use a silicon to seal the lower halfs. what type? is it ok to use omc gasket sealer on the lower gasket below the water pump plate? should i use the gasket sealer on the outside of the seals when i set them in place?
