  • 98 fast strike foot (lower unit)

New to the forum... I have a 98 150 fast strike lost reverse and took it to the mechanic they said $2500.00 for a new foot would be cheaper than buying gears and the labor charge. I was looking around and found new or rebuilt lower units from $1200 as low as$600. Now my question is will the older year models inter change like a 91 or 92 year model with my 98. Im going to use my shaft so shaft length is not an issue. Also when starting up cold it runs great but after running across the lake and getting warm and shutting down, then it starts back up and idols fine then put it in gear and soon as you try to give it a little gas it will die. If you rev it up in neutral and try to throw it in gear it will slowly take off and once it gets going its fine. I have heard the ethanol gas is whats causing it so I got all the gas out and now only going to run marine gas but haven't tried it out yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That gearcase was used on V-6 models from 1996-2001

So any within that year range should work?

And does it have to be specifically for a fast strike or is it just a general standard gear case?
