  • voltage at starter?

I have an outboard 90hp Johnson v4 trying to troubleshoot starting issue.
Battery is at 12.5v when I have my buddy turn key to start motor I get 8.8 v at the starter.

What should my voltage be to turn over the engine? At times the starter just spins and won't engage. Once I have the engine running it will start with no problems.
Its a new starter, connections are clean and tight.

Could it be a solenoid problem/or low voltage at starter?

    thanks Chuck

Like to see 9 volts or higher while cranking over.

Could be relay/solenoid, battery or cables. Have your battery load tested, it is free at autozone or advance autoparts. Check cable connections and cables for corrosion. If all check out good, then try replacing relay.
