my 1996 Johnson 35hp 3 cylinder engine has a problem that causes the engine to cut out randomly generally when throttle is applied but sometimes when at idle. the engines starts ok running on all cylinders but then will lose power and seem to run on one or two cylinders. usually the engine will just stop for no apparent reason whilst opening the throttle or even when at cruise speed or full speed. after the engine cuts out it usually re starts straight away but sometimes it wont start for a while and when it does sounds like its not running on all cylinders. then there are times when the engine starts easily and runs perfectly all day without any issue. I have a suspicion that one or more coil packs have gone (as had a similar problem with a car and new coil packs fixed the problem). don't think its a fuel issue but when the engine cuts out the fuel bulb takes a few pumps to get hard. any suggestions as this is really frustrating...
