Hi , new to boating and new to the forum. I recently purchased my first boat, it's a compact pontoon boat w/ a 25 HP Johnson 3 cylinder ( J25PL3 I think). It's a year 2000, remote control, power trim/ tilt. I think this motor is conspiring to force me out of my new hobby ! This motor leaks gas / oil in the water when trying to start, then at idle. It leaks quite a bit ( IMO ) in a short amount of time , what could be causing this ? That is just one of the problems too. A couple weeks ago the motor started shutting off at WOT, and not stumbling / bumbling like it's running out of gas but flat out shut off like someone turned off the ignition. So we'd put the throttle in neutral and it would start right back up ? Did this several times before it wouldn't refire and we had to take the tow of shame back to the marina. The owner of the marina tried to help us by checking some stuff out , adjusting the carbs etc.. I did change the fuel filter. The next morning it would not start ( but it did fill my slip with fuel / oil while trying to start ! ) . Made some adjustmentst to the idle screws ( small adjustments ) untill it started but now it idles really rough and still leaks gas ? Sorry this thread is so long , I am at my wits end .

First find out where it is leaking the gas and oil, then repair it. Next check for spark and compression. You may need to remove and repair carburetors.

Ok i'll do that, unfortunately, the boating season is pretty much over here in Michigan so i'll have to wait till spring to figure this out. I have it on the trailer now and it leaked a black fluid from an area just behind the prop. Initially I thought it was lower end gear oil but after smelling it , i'm pretty sure it's gas / oil mix . I have a feeling most of my problems are fuel / carb / fuel pump related , we'll see come spring , this sucks.
