  • No spark to spark on 3 cylinders

1991 Johnson 150 outboard. Everything was fine then it wouldn't start. No spark. Brought it to marine mechanic who has had it for 3 weeks now. He originally told us the problem was the stator. Didn't hear from him for 2 weeks. Called him last week and he said changing the stator only got him to 3 cylinders so he was going to change the power pack too and we'd have it by the weekend. No word from him so I called him today. He basically has no clue what the problem is. Says he's put hours and hours into it and that it gives him "the creeps" our bill is now up to $1060 and we really don't have more to dump into it when he doesn't even know if it will be fixed.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas and if it's something we may be able to fix on our own. The thought of dumping a grand into a boat that is now useless is making us sick.

Did he check the trigger assembly?

He didn't say what he has or hasn't checked, he just rattled off a bunch of things it could be. I was under the impression he would diagnose the problem prior to arbitrarily replacing parts.

You should test the trigger assembly.
