  • can i turn my pull start into a elec. start?

I have a1999 Johnson 40hp (40rleea) pull start. Its has mounting spot for starter. Should I be looking for a matching starters to the same motor with a starter or the starter that will match the flywheel? Reason is they are 2 different starters. If I run a parts search on the current flywheel ill find same Johnson motors with a starter. But same motor with starter is a totally different starter!

I am not showing a kit for the 40hp model. You may need to purchase the components separately.

What does ithe OMC 0438628 kit come with? It appears to have the starter I would need (#586279).
Do I need to replace the flywheel? My current flywheel is #0584261
That flywheel has been used in both electric and pull start motors in conjunction with that starter.
Not sure if it’s as simple as the diagram on Starter circuit testing on page 4-76 of the Seloc 1312 manual.
I don’t want to completely eliminate the pull start if at all possible, it would be a great emergency back up.

That kit does not come with a flywheel, you will need to replace. That kit is also designed for tiller handle models, not for remote start.

What's the purpose of replacing the fly wheel? And I'm sure I could modify the button to suit my needs

              The starter rings are different.

The flywheel that is currently on it has a ring gear that on some electric start motors has been matched with the required starter. So missing the reason for changing it out. If you could please clarify

If that is the case then try it.
