Starter recoil question

This is a dumb question but how do you fix the recoil spring on an 85 Johnson 15 HP.
My spring slipped through the slot in the cup, so i ordered a new spring, got the new spring in the cup, now I am trying to wind the spring up and get the cup back in place. Can anyone offer any suggestions or tricks to get this done?
There is a red pawl I think they call it and there is a small spring on the bottom. The end of the spring is just hanging out there. Does it attach or anchor to something?

Unfortunately there is not easy answer for your question. Key is to be sure you put your spring in the same way it came out. If the spring is installed backwards it will not wind properly.
