Hello i was out on the lake last week and the motor was jumping (kicking) in forward and reverse but just for 5-10 seconds then it would go back to normal. It only did this about 4 or 5 times all week and i did go through 70 litres of fuel . i did think to myself oh no the gears or dog clutch are gone because i did have this problem on a previous johnson i had .When i got home i drained the oil it was milky but no sign at all of steel shavings there was only about 3 ounces of oil that came out my question is would having low oil in the gearcase cause the motor to jump ? I have the motor apart and the gears and dog clutch look good is it possible i just need to replace all the seals to prevent water from getting into my lower unit and losing oil Its a 1965 33hp johnson Thanks in advance

You should replace the seals, but that should not cause the motor to kick.

I am just worried that if i replace the seals and it still kicks i will be wasting my time and money because i know gears and dog clutch would cost 3 times what the motor is worth unless i get real lucky and find some good used ones.Any chance you would know a place that sells this kind of stuff ? Thank You

Inspect the gears and clutch dog, if they look good then not likely your problem. eBay is the largest used part supplier.

It was the gears after all i figured i would have to junk the motor .I got real lucky and found a whole lower unit not far from home for 125$.I installed it myself in a few hours not ever doing it before it works with the muffs now lets go test it in the lake...Thanks for your help
