engine clicking noise

2004 4 stroke johnson has a clicking noise. engine light is coming on and seems the SLOW system has kicked in. The check engine light has come on and will not go off. engine will not rev over 3000 rpm. checked lower unit everything looks fine...no shavings oil looks new. prop has clicking sound when in gear (told this was normal) i did hit a rock but engine was making this noise prior to hitting a rock..changed prop went for test ride all ok. 2hrs later boat would not plain out and alarm came on. heard that maybe a gear shifter adjustment? any advise welcomed.

You should have the computer diagnosed. This will narrow your search. Usually only severe codes will cause the computer to limp.

Where's the clicking coming from? Power head or lower? When there's a spark plug wire off or shorting out you will hear it clicking
