  • Not getting 9.5 volts to power pack 72' Johnson

Hi, looking for some guidance on what I think is a voltage drop situation in my 1972 Johnson 100HP outboard. Having a hard time tracking it down. I am mostly concerned with this due to my power pack not getting 9.5 volts when key switch is in start position(it’s at 8.5). Here is what I have done already:

Bought a new battery – I read 12.1 volts off it.
Tested my battery cables and I get .74 volts for both, very close to spec from what I hear.

My voltage tests when in start position:
Solenoid - one of the inner posts 8.7V, the other .49V.
Starter – 9.2 volts at terminal.

Those voltage tests are with the power pack not connected to power source, when I connect the power pack the voltage goes down a bit more. Could someone give me a suggestion on what to test to isolate the problem? I’m just a rookie at this stuff and got the boat as a hand me down from Dad. Thanks for any replies!

Do you not have spark, is that the problem? You would have to be loosing volts through the wire harness. Try running a jumper wire straight to it, see if you still loose all the power.
