98 johnson 90hp no forward gear

New here to the forumn. I was out last weekend boat running fine i docked the boat and had some dinner went back out and long story short i didnt have forward gear. i only had reverse. even when i would trottle forward i was still in reverse. my question is could there be something going on with my throttle cable or something simple before i start tearing into the lower unit? Thanks for any suggestions.....

Yes, could just have a broken throttle cable or internal part of the control box. Remove the cowling, locate where the shift cable is and have someone shift the control box, if the cable does not move or moves slightly then problem is either cable or box.
