  • 1996 Johnson 115hp Oceanrunner head removal

    I have a 115 hp Johnson.
Shortly after leaving the beach the other day the 'Hot' horn sounded. I had only been running at just over idle speed for about 5 minutes. I turned off the motor and lifted it up to see if anything was around the water intakes (the tell tail indicator had a strong flow), there was nothing there.
I started it again after about 5 minutes and left the beach running at about 3800 rpm, didn't have any further problem.
I did have a similar problem a couple of years ago and had the water pump and thermostats replaced by the local agent and haven't had any problems since then (until this one).
When we got back I removed the thermostats from the heads and tested them in water. They were fully open at about 66 degrees C.
I looked into the thermostat pockets in the head and noticed a seal at the bottom that the thermostat fits into. It is deformed and I want to replace these seals.
I would like someones opinion on anything else they would recommend that I do. I am going to replace the Thermostat seals, head seals thermostats and water pump (even though the pump is only two years old and has a very good flow). My manual mentions to check the water deflectors in the head for wear, is it common practice to replace these?
Also what sealant would you recommend to seal between the head and block waterways.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Any high temp sealant will work. You have all the regular service items, you should be good.
