  • 1987 50 HP J50TLCUD Idle issue

    Hi experts,

I'm trying to help a friend with their 50 hp and it is whipping me at the moment. Dont know much about the history of the motor except that it kept dying on them and the primer bulb kept going soft. She had someone work on it that messed up the shift linkage to where it wouldnt go in gear, set the idle halfway to WOT. She got the boat back and got past the no-wake zone and it kept dying on her again. We hauled them in and I started checking out the motor.

Compression test was @150 on both cylinders. Then I put the fuel outlet in a bottle and got nothing. Vacuum tested the VRO and it was gone. Owner was not using the oil side of the VRO anyway and was already pre-mixing the 50:1. Converted it to the OEM lift fuel pump for that model, and it pumped gas great. Bulb stays firm now. I blocked off the oil and pulse hoses to the old VRO.

It still wouldnt Idle right after a link and sync, so I pulled the carbs and found a air silencer screw sitting on the leaf valves.

a bunch of screws and hose clamps, new hose, etc later, I have it in the yard on muffs. It runs decently well at around 1200, but tring to get the timing and idle down to around 800 - 900 it will sputter and die.

I notice on the bottom carb if I partially restrict the airflow with my hand the RPMs will kick up. I cleaned that carb again today including the welch plugs, checked the link again, but still a pretty rough idle. And the warm-up lever is very slow to respond.

I'm starting to pull out what little hair I have left. Would very much appreciate any thoughts or guidance. Thanks!

Did you varify the timing and spark? Also check the air fuel mixture screw. Where the leaf plates ok?
