I have a 2002 175hp. Johnson outboard. When I first crank up from the launch the motor will run just fine all the way to where I'm going fishing, after fishing for some time I start the motor and it will idle for about 20-30 seconds and die out. Resart motor and when put into gear and try to give it throttle it will die out on me. I will have to restart the motor approx. 10 times before I can get the motor to get going when put it gear. I also seem to be losing a cylinder after running for a while, don't know if its just a plug fouling out or what, I can change the plugs and the next time I go out it will run just fine from the launch and the cycle starts all over again. Anyone have any similar sysptoms or ideas of what it could be?

Start with checking fuel and spark. Could be over oiling and causing the plugs to foul, like the other gentleman said.

Thanks for the advice guys as soon as I get a chance i will check the VRO pump for any leaks. Is there an easy way to tell if the pump is going bad? I have been told that I need to change the fuel lines to the motor, last time when I was out on the boat and the motor kept diing out when put into gear or letting idle too long my buddy tried to pump the primmer bulb and said that he couldn't pump the bulb at all because it was hard as a rock. Is this an indication of a collapsed hose or something worse? I tried to choke the motor during this but it just would want to die out even more. I'm also thinking of replacing the shifter or installing a hotfoot so that I can throttle the motor a little bit when in neutral to warm it up, the shifter i have on my triton does not have the capability to throttle the motor without being in gear.

Possible fix
I had a similar problem with my 1999 Johnson 175. Then it would run fine in the when I 1st go on the lake...I would stop and fish...then it would act up. It wouldn't get above 2200RPM...I tried everything that I could...except taking it to the mechanic....I broke down and took it....it ended up being my stator and power pack. They told me my stator was fine at 1st, then heated up and was actually dripping down the motor....and 4 of the 6 points on the power pack were not firing...so that would be my main step...at least check them....they charged me $400 for the stator, but it on ebay for $165...from the same company...and they wanted to charge me $425 for the power pack and $100 for the power pack switch...I bought them on ebay for $220 total...so...The labor killed me...but maybe you can do most of the maint. yourself. Good luck.
