  • starter issue for 25HP Johnson tracker (1989)

I have a 25hP johnson tracker (Model TJ25ELCEB) and suddenly the starter wheel will NOT come up to engage the fly wheel. I read lots of posts on this forum and spent time using WD40 and cleaning the connections to the battery, etc. The battery is charged.

    any other suggestions?

Assuming I need a new starter, how do I go about removing the old starter in there now? I am not into engines and it looks like a lot of wires and connections that do not appear on the part picture (blow out). Any advice would be great. I spent the entire spring refurbishing my pontoon and now the starter is shot I think.

    Thanks,
    New to forum---Brad

Load test battery and battery cables to make sure getting enough voltage to starter, grease starter drive and retry.

Will do. What should the load be? and where/what area of the starter should I grease? Can I leave the starter in the motor or do I need to remove the starter? Hope I can leave starter in motor! Thanks

Most load tester are 500 amps, grease the shaft where bendix rides.

Thanks for the help---to close out this thread...I ended up spraying the shaft/bendix area with WD40, cleaned all battery connections and it still did not help. So I took a screwdriver (not recommended) and tried to pry up the starter wheel to see if it would engage.....and that seemed to fix it for the time being at least. The starter wheel now comes up and engags the fly wheel resulting in a motor that now turns over.
