  • 1985 25 HP J25TECOS lower unit removal

Inherited this motor from my Dad. Hasn't been run in 3 years. Got it started on muffs, but noticed nothing from the pee holes. I figure the water pump needs replacing. It looks like the lower unit has never been off.

Removed the 4 bolts and forward nut and can get the unit lowered about an inch and that's it.

Question: What is the procedure to removing the lower unit?

Motor has electric start, with forward and reverse lever on Starboard side of engine.

Is 100/1 really the gas/oil ratio? I was thinking 50/1 was standard.

    Thanks for your help.

When you lower the unit down an inch as you describe if you look in the gap you can see the gear shift shaft. It has a joiner that you can undo to separate the 2 ends of the shaft so the gearcase can be removed. I had a 1982 Johnson 15 that was like this. On my 1993 25 you can take off the intake screen and part the shaft before you remove the bolts.
Both my Johnsons have been 50/1 so I think yours would be too.

The previous post is on the right track. Be sure to disconnect the shift shaft, also the oil mixture should be 50:1.
