  • Johnson 115, Help please

I have a 2006 Johnson J115GLSDE that has run for 5 years without a hitch. This year the motor will not transition from low speed to high speed operation. I can advance the throttle to about 1500 to 1800 RPM's but when I try to advance past there the motor dies. In an effort to correct this I have replaced the fuel lines, cleaned and rebuilt the carburetors and throttle bodies and replaced the fuel pump and although the motor runs considerably better the problem still exists. I can push the key in (push to choke) and advance the throttle past 2000RPM's and the motor runs great at all speed above 2000 RPM's but it wont run at all through that 1500 to 2000 RPM zone. Any ideas?

Check all your adjustments and timing links. Varify the timing is advancing with the throttle.

this is something I have thought of but have not yet looked at because I was convinced ity was a carbureto problem. What should the timing be at idle and what should it advance to?

idle should be 4 +/- 1 degrees ATDC. WOT 20 +/- 1 BTDC. There are specialty tools required for proper adjustment. I also recommend a BRP service manual.

I read thrugh the process and it doesn't sound like something I can do. See no point in buying a bunch of equipment to use once. I can check the timing and will do that, I'll let you know. Won't be able to get to it for a couple days. Thanks.

            final resolution

I don't know if anyone looks this far back through the posts or not but I'll post this anyway. Ithought all along that it was a fuel delivery problem and I turned out t be right. The carburetors were removed and rebuilt/cleaned a total of four times before the problem was resolved, but this is where the poblem was. I have read numerous post describing the same problem and no one was able to pinpoint the issue. I don't know exactly where the problem was other than to say carbs bcause I never saw anything when cleaning them. they weren't obviously dirty. even though the boat is six years old the motor doesn't have a lot of hours and was always maintained. Bottom line, if al he signs point to a fuel delivery problem, it's probably a fuel delivery problem. thank for the help.
