  • 2000 Johnson 200 Loosing power

I've had motor serviced, carbs cleaned, plugs, new fuel bubble, even tried a new power pak. Motor will sometimes bog real bad when coming out of the hole. If you stay in it until it finally plains off, it will only turn up to about 5k rpms max. All of a sudden the motor will pick up and run correctly. Or you may get up on plain running along fine and all of a sudden you feel the power decrease and the rpm's will drop down under 5k...it may stay like that for a few seconds or a few minutes before suddenly returning to running normal. I emphasize that it doesn't do this all the time. One day it may run fine all day..the next day it may be a pain acting up as described. I've had this boat two years and its been doing this ever since I got it. It hasn't been doing it very bad this spring but this past weekend it acted up pretty bad. One note...this past weekend was the hottest we've had so far this year. It does SEEM to have this problem when it is hotter. I've run premium and regular gas with no noticable change. It's like I'm loosing a cylinder or something but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Please help!

Check for spark on each cylinder with a timing light when engine looses rpm's to see loosing fire to any of cylinders.

This has been done...but the problem is that you cannot predict nor make the motor act up.

You will have to wait till it acts up.

Their is no way to predict when the motor will act up. Last weekend it ran fine all day...and then running along at about 5300rpm's it suddenly dropped down to about 4600...stayed this way for about 15 seconds then jumped back up to 5300 and ran fine after that one incident. Some days it is much worse....in and out.
A mechanic has checked the fire and it checked ok. But that doesn't mean that it's not loosing fire. If so, what could be causing it to loose fire in this unpredictable way?

Is there ANYONE on this forum who might be able to tell me why this motor could be loosing power? If it is loosing fire to a cylinder...which it does seem to be doing, then what could be causing it? I have tried a different power pak but it didn't help.

You really have to narrow down the search area. If it loosing spark then we can go in that direction if it is fuel, that is another direction.

                I have a 2000 Johnson 175

I don't know if you said this was a Ficht or not, but I replaced the VRO on my motor last summer and it made a TON of difference after I had much the same problem you did. Turns out the fuel pump side of my VRO was getting weak.

Though I now have other problems...ugh, that problem at least is fixed.
