  • 97 Johnson Won't Start

Can’t seem to get my 1997 Johnson 90HR engine to run. I took it out of storage and tried to get it started but it seems like it isn’t getting any fuel at all. Added some fresh fuel, primer bulb was stiff so I replaced it and added a new fuel filter. Disconnected the fuel line to the VRO and fuel running through the filter fine. Disconnected the fuel line from the VRO to the carbs and fuel running through the VRO fine when I pump the primer bulb. Replaced the spark plugs. Old ones had carbon but were dry. Tested the spark to each cylinder and there is spark at each one. Removed the carbs and cleaned those up, but they were really not that bad. Any other ideas or has anyone had the same issue? Engine ran fine when I winterized it last fall.

Yes, the lanyard is in place and the fuel filter is fine. Just replaced it.

Sounds like not getting gas, check choke is working and when choke is applied gas is going through carbs to engine.

What would be the best way to check the choke?

The choke primer will squirt fuel when engaged.

Just wanted to finish up this post. The problem turned out to be the ignition switch. It was grounding itself. Anyway, problem solved.
