need diagnostic help

I have a johnson 80hp outboard 2 stroke. I was out riding yesterday for a few hours, docked the boat for a bit. When I went to start it back up, it made a funny noise then shut off. When I went to restart, only heard the celinoid click. Battery was fine. Wondering if it is the starter or something more serious. What's the best way to find out?

varify you did not seize your motor, remove the spark plugs and turn motor over by hand.
