  • 88hp water leak

Hi All, just signed on your forum looking to gain some info on the Johnson outboard that came on the boat I just purchased. It is a '93 model 88spl. The motor has low hours according to the seller and has never had any work other than routine maint. Before I started it for MY first time, I changed the water pump, rebuilt the fuel pump and serviced the lower unit. Well today I took the cover off and started it with the muffs and it was a little slow to idle on its own but soon did and sounded very healthy. I walked back to check my water flow with it running and it was peeing a good stream. Then I noticed water collecting in the housing under the engine cover, not alot but a continuous flow. Standing at the rear of the engine it appeared the water was coming from between the right cylinder and the flat plate on the bottom of the engine. It was very hard to see between the two to pinpoint the leak. When I turned the engine off with the water hose still running it did not leak. Any help on this would be greatly accepted. thanks 3d

Sounds like you have a blown gasket.
