Hello,
I have a 1988 Johnson 48HP outboard, model # VJ48ESLCCC, and Serial # G7757438. The power tilt & trim appears to be leaking internally. The unit powers up and down just fine. However, when I leave the engine in the up position, over time it slowly lowers by itself. There is no external leakage of fluid. Is this an O-ring problem, or is it one or more of the valves? What would you recommend that I do to fix this problem? I understand parts are difficult at best to find, but I would like to try to fix if I can vs. purchasing a replacement unit. The only information on the unit that I could find without removing it from its mounts was “Prestolite”. Is there a part number on the housing that I have missed? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chip
