  • 1993 sneezes, hard start/keep it running, stalls

1993 150 fast strike, mod#:TJ150GLETR, S/N:G03156962. Starts great but a bit rough, then idles down after about 5 sec. and somewhat smooths out. kinda sounds like a harley. When you put it in gear and move around the ramp to dock, it sneezes at times and stalls out. restart and put it in gear, with a little white smoke visible, go across the lake to the fishing spot with a small amout of white smoke still visible. After about an hour, try and crank, crank, tries to catch then eventually is starts up after 15-20 min. of cranking. Put it in gear, it makes a hollow noise and stalls out. Do this a few times and it finally gets going and on plane to the next spot and the process starts over again. I put a spark tester between the coil and plug and it appears to be weak and not distinct although i'm not exaclty sure what it's supposed to look like. I have the service manual, and the stator checks out fine with the exception of the charge coil,(testing the two orange wires on the round connector that go to the regulator which according to the book should be wetweem 495 to 605 ohms and I get 4 to 5 ohms. Thus far I verified the fuel line security and replaced the VRO due to oil alarm, new pluggs installed, and removed and cleaned the carbs and removed alot ot varnish/crap from them. When I sqeeze the primer ball it kinda whistles/groans until the ball gets hard and stops. When I bought the boat it hesistated during hole shot until up on plane. After the carb cleanup, it seemed to resolve the problem. I'm going to the store and pickup an analog meter to complete the 500v checks as required in the manual. I'm picking up a can so I cna run the motor off the muffs to add load/back pressure on the motor and try and duplicate the problem. Any help appriciated.

    Update on problem from troubleshooting:
Checked output voltage from charge? coil and got 100v (minimum reqd is 150 from manual) brown six pin connector from stator to Power Pack (PP). No output voltage from PP from primary lead of PP to coil, but I may not be doing the test right. But the engine starts and runs, but idle is slightly rough. Now i'm trying to figure out which PP I have on the engine and if it has to be matched the stator?

Probably still running too lean, low speed circuits in carb plugged or air leak on intake side of engine.

      1993 sneezes

Please specify low speed circuits in carb plugged. I've completly disassembled the carbs, removed all varnish deposits and reinstalled and match OEM specifications. One thing I have noticed is that I do get a small amount of fuel from the carb mouth. Could the the error be located in the throttle body assy? If the stator only puts out 100v can that cause a similar experiance? Also, can the optical sensor be cleaned with rubbing alcohol or must it be replaced? Thanks for the follow up.

are you using a DVA meter to check power pack ? Also make sure your link and sinc are done IAW Johnson OEM manual.Do not use Seloc, they are crap.

Make sure your motor is all the way down, or it will miss and also make sure your carb butterflies are completely closed at idle. If you have a lean sneeze get a propane torch and crack the gas open into each Carb. It should drop RPM'S over richening each carb. If your motor suddenly picks up and stops sneezing you have now found a lean carb.

Ok, I'll chech the butterflies and perform the torch gas test. I assume that you mean to have the engine tilted all the way down. On the link and sync are you refering to the linkage between the carbs and throttle body? Great, the Seloc is what I have. What OEM book do you recommend and why do you not prefer the Seloc? During my net travels I also found out that it's common on the 1993 black sleeved stators and blue PP that this has been known to occur. I picked up a new stator (grey sleeve) and PP. I'm waiting on the rest of the order to come in from boats.net so I can complete the parts replacement. The original stator failed a few tests, thus I replaced it and the PP due to it being a blue sleeved one which can't go with the new grey sleeved stator according to the data sheets. My new issue is the new PP I recieved has the correct P/N, and wire markings on it for a grey sleeve, but a blue sleeve installed on it. Go figure. The manu is checking on the issue before I install it.

            fixed the sneezes

Installed a new stator, power pack, adjusted the butterflies on the carb linkages, and verified timing with the exception of the special OMC timing tool for the optical. I also ran a rather stiff mix of sea foam down it's throat (sprayed in carbs and ran mixed with gas on seperate line. The engine runs smooth and only twitches from time to time. Thanks for all the help.

Good to hear , I can send you the plans to build a DVA adapter also
if you know how to solder, but then again I can show you that too.
