  • 1989 Johnson 8 hp question - water intake

    Hi,

I will be going to look at an 89 8 hp motor this weekend for a possible purchase. Does this motor have the side water intake so I can use the "earmuffs" to keep it cool at start up or is it underneath, requiring a bucket to run it? Also, the guy says it has less than 20 hours on it. What should the compression be reading? It has been sitting for approx. 6 years.....anything I should do before attempting to start it? I'm pretty new to boat motors and I appreciate any advice! Thanks.

You would need to stick it in a bucket for out of water running. The typical rule of thumb for compression on Johnson/Evinrude is over 90PSI and within 15PSI of each other.
