  • '99 8 hp Johnson quits running when warm

    Hello-

I bought a '99 8 hp Johnson (J8REEM) last fall. Ran fine when test drove, paid the guy, the attempted to take it right back out and couldn't get it started again. I have had it back out numerous times and it runs fine for about 5 minutes, then once it is warmed up, it won't start again.

Here is what I have done, and no change:

Replaced plugs and wires. Spark jumps across 12mm when tested.
    Cleaned and rebuilt carb.
    Rebuilt fuel pump.
Replaced fuel connection from tank to motor. Bulb stays firm. Tank vents.
Rebuilt water pump...it has always had a pretty good stream.
    Changed lower unit fluid.
Tested compression, 74 psi on both cylinders.

What should I do next? I was thinking thermostat, then coil and or head gasket...

I have heard a compression in the 70s is fine, is this true?

At wits end....thank you in advance.

    Phil

The compression seems low, usually for an engine to run properly it needs to be over 100PSI. You have covered all the bases, out side the compression, it should work fine. Be sure that your carburetor is adjusted properly.
